Wendy Wax Signs Ocean Beach Sun., Jul. 1

Blue Bicycle Books welcomes Wendy Wax for a book-signing to celebrate her new novel Ocean Beach Sun., Jul. 1 from 2-4 pm.

Ocean Beach picks up the story of Madeline, Avery, and Nicole, three friends ready for a fresh start in Miami’s South Beach, where they’ve been hired to restore a historic house for a new home makeover television program. The project is supposed to be a first step in the right direction for each of them, but under the bright lights of the television cameras they learn that the restoration process–on both the home and themselves–might be more difficult than they thought.

Ocean Beach is Wendy Wax’s eighth novel. A St. Pete, FL native, she has resided in Atlanta, GA for the last fifteen years. Wendy has been featured in USA Today and Cosmopolitan magazine, and she is the recipient of the Virginia Romance Writers Holt Medallion Award and is a Romance Writers of America RITA Award finalist .

Piccolo Fiction Open

Blue Bicycle Books welcomes 5 local writers back to our lush courtyard for another Piccolo Fiction Open on Sat., June 2 from 5-7 pm. All five writers will be reading new 5 minute short stories, each of them beginning with the words “I ducked into the alley…” This year’s writers are:

Beth Webb Hart, South Carolina native and bestselling author of 5 novels including Sunrise on the Batteryand Grace at Low Tide.

Malinda McCollum, Pushcart Prize winning author and current College of Charleston creative writing professor.

Stephanie Hunt, contributing editor at Skirt! Magazine and the SoMA Review.

Ryan Graudin, College of Charleston graduate and writer whose first novel Luminance Hour will be released in Summer 2013

Jonathan Sanchez, two-time winner of the S.C. Fiction Project and owner of Blue Bicycle Books.

Attendees will also be treated to live music from Lime and the Coconuts. Admission is FREE, and the readings will be followed by a reception.



Alethea Kontis signs Enchanted, Fri., May 25!

Young Adult author Alethea Kontis will be at Blue Bicycle this Friday, May 25, 3:30 pm to sign her new book Enchanted.

Alethea was the science fiction student of great writers Andre Norton and Orson Scott Card. She joins us from Virginia.

Her new book is a classic story with some not-so-classic twists. Sunday is a princess who meets an enchanted frog. The two share their stories and develop a magical friendship. One night Sunday kisses the frog goodbye, not realizing that her love has transformed into the prince of Arilland, a man her family despises. Western North Carolina native Wiley Cash will sign copies of A Land More Kind Than Home, Thurs. May 24, from 5:30 to 7 pm, at Blue Bicycle Books.  A portion of the proceeds will go to Charleston Volunteers for Literacy and its Book Buddies reading program for at-risk second graders.

The novel is the story of Jess Hall, a curious boy growing up in small town North Carolina. Jess is very protective of his older brother, a mute who everyone calls Stump. Their mother has always warned them not to snoop into other people’s business, but Stump can’t help it. Stump’s prying leads to shattering consequences, pushing Jess into adulthood earlier than expected. This novel reveals masterful characters from a young author with great promise.

Brian Hicks signs City of Ruin , May 10!

Come meet local historian and columnist, Brian Hicks Thurs., May 10, 5-7 pm. Hicks will be signing copies of his new book City of Ruin: Charleston at War 1860-1865.

The project began as a 20-part serial that ran in the pages of The Post and Courier from December 2010 to April 2011. For the book, Hicks expanded the series, incorporating additional stories and the perspectives of people on both sides as war broke out in the heart of Charleston. The book details the military actions around the city and how the conflict affected life for residents and shopkeepers, as well as the city’s sizeable population of slaves and freedmen.

Herb Silverman signs new autobiography, Apr. 29!

Local author and activist Herb Silverman will be at the store Sun., Apr. 29, 3-5 pm to sign his new memoir Candidate Without a Prayer.
