Katie Johnston Jewelry and Lauren Sanchez Purses, Thurs., Dec. 17, 5 – 7 pm
Blue Bicycle Books will have champagne and snacks and feature local designers Katie Johnston (jewelry) and our own Lauren Sanchez (pocketbooks), two old friends from Auburn architecture school. Both women are taking a break, and taking cues, from their day jobs in order to design and create accessories.
Katie Johnston incorporates architectural design vocabulary into each of her pieces. She works in sterling silver, gold fill and reused materials like CMYK newspaper aluminum printing plates, aluminum building flashing and HVAC grills.
“Jewelry allows me the opportunity to design and create on a small scale with the hopes of forming a unique object that delights the soul,” Johnston says. “I know it’s a little gushy but it’s true.”
Lauren Sanchez’s first L_Design handbags were created from leftover samples that her architectural firm was going to throw away. Seven years and 
hundreds of handbags later, Sanchez still uses modern, retro and classic upholstery fabrics on her trusty Bernina, sewing clutches, wallets and shoulder bags.
