Goodbye Dear Friend

We are looking for a new home for our store cat. It’s not healthy to keep her here any longer. She is a very temperamental cat and is used to having the store to herself. Some of you may remember our other cat Grumpy, who shared the store with Purdy back in the late 90s. Unfortunately, there was rivalry and intimidation. Grumpy developed a condition and passed on in 1999. Now it seems that the presence of our 18-month-old daughter Evelyn is causing Purdy a lot of stress, which has manifested itself in intestinal discomfort.

We hope to have her in new environs — with no other pets or babies — by July 31. Please contact us if you have any suggestions.

A Fistfight Over Commas — Jonny Miles

Garden & Gun Magazine hosted a party for Jonny Miles in the narrow courtyard three doors down — white wine and Red Stripes from Charleston Green Home. Jonny’s story on the Blind Boys of Alabama is in the current issue of Garden & Gun, and he spoke about his first meeting with G&G editor Sid Evans, when they were both new to the business.

“Sid basically pulled me out of the slush pile when he was working at Sports Afield. I flew to New York to meet with him in the Hearst Building. He was the first New York editor I’d ever worked with and I had these visions of this manly office with elk and record hunts mounted on the wall, and then we’d go out to Elaine’s for lunch and get in this huge fistfight over commas. I think we actually just went out for tacos.”

Jonny Miles, Wed., June 10, 5:30

Wed., June 10, 5:30 – 7:30 pm, Jonathan Miles will sign copies of Dear American Airlines. (Mariner Books, pb., $14).  Bennie Ford’s flight is cancelled and as he resigns himself to the truth that he’ll miss his estranged daughter’s wedding, he sits down to write a letter of complaint — this 180-page reflection on his life.

Miles’ debut novel made the cover of the New York Times Book Review. Jonny’s friends from Garden and Gun magazine are co-sponsoring this paperback release party, Charleston Green Home (103 Logan St., downtown) is providing the wine.

Burke Lit Mag Release Party May 15

The book release party for Kissing a Biting Spider, vol. 3 of the Burke High School literary magazine, part of LILA’s Poets in the Schools, is Friday, May 15th, 6 to 8 p.m., Alumni Memorial Hall on the campus of the College of Charleston (the building behind the Cistern). Join us for a reception, silent auction and a reading.

This book is the result of workshops that Blue Bicycle Books owner Jonathan Sanchez along with local poets Keverlee Burchett and Richard Garcia led at downtown Charleston’s only public high school last fall. Here’s a  taste of some of the many great lines:

“I remember seeing flooded streets after a Friday rainfall.”

“I remember my father’s house burning down, and thinking, ‘Do I have to pay for my textbooks that were inside?’”

“I believe in sandwiches because the layers of bread are like the stress I’m building inside.”

“I believe in mild-mannered teachers.”

“I kissed a biting spider.”

May and June Events

Sat., May 23, 11 am, Jonathan Miller, author and illustrator of The Adventures of Sammy the Wonder Dachshund, will signs copies and give a storytime reading. Jonathan Miller quit his job at Oak Steakhouse to create and market this great local children’s book about a dachshund saying his goodbyes around town. All of the artwork was created from construction paper cut-outs and Sharpies. Come join us on the carpet for juice boxes and a raffle to win a free copy.

Blue Bicycle Books Spoleto Party Series – Four Nights of Great Books and The Coldest Wine in TownTM

Sat., May 23, 5 – 7 pm. Release party for Sandy Logan’s book of photography, From the Edge. (Reidesign, hb., $75). A noted local architect, Logan’s sublime collection of “abstract” photographs of graffiti and industrial sites ain’t exactly Rainbow Row, so leave your fanny pack at home and come join us for a glass of wine. Sandy will also be hanging prints around the store — our first art show in two years.

Thurs., May 28, 5 – 7 pm, Greenville writer Mindy Friddle will sign copies of Secret Keepers (St. Martin’s, hb., $25). I first met Mindy when we both read at the inaugural Piccolo Fiction Open back in 1999 (see below: Sat., May 30), and we’re thrilled to host the Charleston release party for her second novel. Come join us for a glass of wine.

Fri., May 29, 5 – 7 pm. Anne Barnhill will sign copies of her short story collection, What You Long For (Main Street Rag, pb. $15). Come join us for a glass of wine.

She’ll headline the 9th Annual Piccolo Fiction Open, a free Piccolo Spoleto event. This year’s PFO winners John Foster, Debra Daniel and Susanna Glattly will read their winning short stories.  *****

Sun., May 31, 2 – 4 pm, Margaret Wagner will sign copies of World War II 365 Days. (Abrams, hb., $30)

Wed., June 10, 5 – 7 pm. Jonathan Miles will sign copies of Dear American Airlines. (Mariner Book, pb., $14). This debut novel made the cover of the New York Times Book Review (read the review). Miles will read in our courtyard and sign copies at a party sponsored by our friends across the street at Garden and Gun magazine.

Fri., June 12, 5 – 7 pm. Jeffrey Rotter, signing The Unknown Knowns. (Scribner, hb. $25). This debut novel has drawn comparisons to Pynchon and Vonnegut, and Douglas Coupland calls it “A Confederacy of Dunces meets Linus waiting for the Great Pumpkin.” Coming from one of my very favorite writers, that’s one tasty morsel of blurb stew. Jeff grew up in Columbia and his folks live down here — come welcome him back to Kakalak.
