John Reynolds signs The Fight for Freedom

Thurs., Aug 16, 4 – 6 pm, Civil Rights advocate John Reynolds will be signing his new book The Fight for Freedom: a Memoir of My Years in the Civil Rights Movement. Beginning in the summer of 1965, Reynolds was an active foot soldier in the Civil Rights Movement. Beginning in his hometown of Troy, Alabama, within a few months Reynolds found himself in Atlanta being interviewed by Martin Luther King, Jr. In his memoir, he recounts his experiences in some of the Movement’s hot spots: Selma, Birmingham, and Mississippi, among others.

An ordained American Baptist minister, Reynolds spent twelve years serving as a pastor in Rhode Island before relocating to Charleston.

Story Hour with Peter Cotton

Local surgeon and children’s author Peter Cotton will be at Blue Bicycle Books on Thur., Aug. 9 at 12 pm for a story hour featuring his new children’s book When the Fred the Snake Got Squished and Mended (27 pp., hb., $19.98).

Cotton’s book is a delightful tale featuring rhymes, humor, and colorful illustrations by Bonnie Lemaire. The author will be reading aloud as well as signing books.

Peter Cotton is an MUSC surgeon and former director of the MUSC Digestive Disease Center. When Fred the Snake Got Squished and Mended is his first children’s book and will soon be followed by a sequel When Fred the Snake Goes to School. Norb Vonnegut Signs The Trust

Blue Bicycle Books and the Charleston Library Society are proud to present Norb Vonnegut, to sign The Trust, his newest novel, at the Library Society (164 King St.) Thurs., July 26 at 6 pm.

The Trust is a suspenseful tale of high-stakes financial intrigue. After the accidental drowning death of his friend and mentor Palmer Kincaid, Grove O’Rourke receives a call from Kincaid’s daughter asking him to temporarily assume control of Kincaid’s philanthropic organization, the Palmer Foundation. Soon, though, O’Rourke begins to suspect the Palmer organization is not what it seems, and some digging reveals that the foundation may be a front for something far less innocent than charity work.

Norb Vonnegut received his MBA from Harvard in 1986 and worked on Wall Street for a number of years. The Trust is his third book.



Book Release Party for Jonathan Buchan’s Code of the Forest Fri., July 13

Jonathan Buchan will be at Blue Bicycle Books Fri., July 13 from 5-7 pm to celebrate the release of his new novel Code of the Forest (Joggling Board, 362 pp., hb., $24.99).

Code of the Forest tells the story of Wade McNabb, the editor of a Georgetown, South Carolina newspaper who breaks a story on political corruption surrounding a coastal chemical plant. Wade faces the consequences of meddling in SC’s insider politics when a powerful senator threatens repercussions for publishing the story. Refusing to back down, Wade turns to local lawyer Kate Stewart for help, and together they prepare for a showdown with the state’s power players.

Wendy Wax Signs Ocean Beach Sun., Jul. 1

Blue Bicycle Books welcomes Wendy Wax for a book-signing to celebrate her new novel Ocean Beach Sun., Jul. 1 from 2-4 pm.

Ocean Beach picks up the story of Madeline, Avery, and Nicole, three friends ready for a fresh start in Miami’s South Beach, where they’ve been hired to restore a historic house for a new home makeover television program. The project is supposed to be a first step in the right direction for each of them, but under the bright lights of the television cameras they learn that the restoration process–on both the home and themselves–might be more difficult than they thought.

Ocean Beach is Wendy Wax’s eighth novel. A St. Pete, FL native, she has resided in Atlanta, GA for the last fifteen years. Wendy has been featured in USA Today and Cosmopolitan magazine, and she is the recipient of the Virginia Romance Writers Holt Medallion Award and is a Romance Writers of America RITA Award finalist .

Piccolo Fiction Open

Blue Bicycle Books welcomes 5 local writers back to our lush courtyard for another Piccolo Fiction Open on Sat., June 2 from 5-7 pm. All five writers will be reading new 5 minute short stories, each of them beginning with the words “I ducked into the alley…” This year’s writers are:

Beth Webb Hart, South Carolina native and bestselling author of 5 novels including Sunrise on the Batteryand Grace at Low Tide.

Malinda McCollum, Pushcart Prize winning author and current College of Charleston creative writing professor.

Stephanie Hunt, contributing editor at Skirt! Magazine and the SoMA Review.

Ryan Graudin, College of Charleston graduate and writer whose first novel Luminance Hour will be released in Summer 2013

Jonathan Sanchez, two-time winner of the S.C. Fiction Project and owner of Blue Bicycle Books.

Alethea Kontis signs Enchanted, Fri., May 25!

Young Adult author Alethea Kontis will be at Blue Bicycle this Friday, May 25, 3:30 pm to sign her new book Enchanted.

Alethea was the science fiction student of great writers Andre Norton and Orson Scott Card. She joins us from Virginia.

Her new book is a classic story with some not-so-classic twists. Sunday is a princess who meets an enchanted frog. The two share their stories and develop a magical friendship. One night Sunday kisses the frog goodbye, not realizing that her love has transformed into the prince of Arilland, a man her family despises.
