The Blue Bicycle Books Author’s Luncheon Series continues Fri., Dec. 17, 12 – 2 pm, with a special visit from the first lady of the University of South Carolina, Patricia Moore-Pastides, along with renowned food writer and chef Nathalie Dupree.

Moore-Pastides is the author of Greek Revival: Cooking for Life (USC Press, hb. $34.95), eighty-seven recipes tailored for the needs and appetites of everyday cooks. A Connecticut native with a Masters in Public Health from Yale University, Moore-Pastides peppers her book with anecdotes from her days living in Greece and Cyprus, as well as revealing scientific insights about the benefits of the Mediterranean diet.

Joining her is James Beard-award-winning chef and food writer Nathalie Dupree, author of Nathalie Dupree’s Shrimp and Grits, New Southern Cooking and many others.

Taught by his grandfather Carew, Clay Rice is a 21st century folk artist and a Lowcountry treasure. Watching him cut a child’s silhouette in five minutes has been called performance art in itself. Last year, we watched as he was actually able to capture a recognizable profile of our squirming one-year-old in less time than it takes to get her shoes on.

His national touring schedule keeps him on the road often, cutting more than 10,000 children’s silhouettes a year, so events back home in Charleston are rare!

Pat Conroy has graciously offered to come and sign copies of his blockbuster novel South of Broad at Blue Bicycle Books (about a mile north of Broad, for the record).

This is his only booksigning on the Peninsula. South of Broad is already our all-time bestseller. We’ve received hundreds of requests for signed copies. We’re a little psyched.

As you know, the Blue Bike is not big on policies, but we do have a few for this event.

***To secure a place in line, customers can get tickets for the signing starting Friday, Dec. 11. Tickets are free to customers who purchase a Pat Conroy hardback.

Two years ago, Mahwish (pronounced Meh-vish) trained with Erin Gruwell and other educators in Long Beach, Cal. Gruwell was portrayed by Oscan-winning actress Hilary Swank in the 2007 movie Freedom Writers.

Teaching Hope is a collection of short testimonies from McIntosh and other Freedom Writer teachers, about their experiences with using Gruwell’s journaling techniques in the classroom. (To protect the privacy of her sttudents, her essay is anonymous.)
